Bulletins

Role: Director of Communications, St. Thomas More Catholic Church (Austin, TX)

The Challenge

The bulletin is a 12-page weekly publication that shares relevant information with the parish community. Each week, the content is submitted in a variety of formats by staff members and ministry leaders. When I inherited the publication, there were only basic design principles and elements applied to the bulletin.

The Solution:

Phase 1

I migrated the design file from Microsoft Publisher to Adobe InDesign so a stronger and more consistent design style could be employed. Next, I formalized the name of the publication as The Bulletin. Finally, I refined the kinds of images used throughout the publication: fine art based on the week's gospel on the cover and lifestyle photography or program/ministry logos are used on the interior.

During this initial redesign, I also built a content management system using Airtable. This system eases the content curation, editing and deployment efforts. There are three primary front-end elements:

Deadlines

Stakeholders have access to always up-to-date deadlines and brief explanations of any deadline deviations. > See the deadline page

Submission Form

Staff and ministry leaders can submit content for the bulletin via a dynamic form embedded on the parish website. This form automatically removes editions from the options as the deadline passes. > See the submission form

Preview

As content is being processed, relevant members of the community can preview the content that will be included in upcoming editions of The Bulletin. > See the preview

Phase 2

Building off the first phase of the redesign, I added design elements to better present information - specifically details regarding events.

Phase 3

Once the parish brand was released, a new iteration of The Bulletin was developed to incorporate the new assets.
